One of the most complex space missions planned for this decade, NASA's Artemis IV will seek to return humans to the lunar surface for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972. The current mission plan envisions sending four astronauts, two of whom will remain in lunar orbit, while two descend to the surface and spend a week near the lunar South Pole conducting experiments. The mission will involve the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, with SpaceX or Blue Origin providing the Human Landing System (HLS). In addition to returning humans to the Moon, Artemis IV will also serve as the first step in NASA's plan to establish a long-term human presence on our only natural satellite, testing some of the foundational technologies required for NASA's planned Moon Base. The mission is expected to launch in the first half of 2028.
