2025 supermoons recap: 10 best images of the year's grand lunar events
Part of what made 2025 such a remarkable year for skywatchers was the spectacle of three supermoons lighting up the night sky. In case this is the first time you are coming across this term, a supermoon arrives in the sky when our sole natural satellite nears its perigee—its closest point to Earth. As a result, the Moon appears bigger than usual. So you can't really miss it. And even if you did, here are some of the best images of the celestial event that made the nights this year seem almost magical.
The Harvest Moon (October)
An extremely well-timed image managed to capture the silhouette of a plane against the huge orange Harvest Moon shining over London on the 7th of October.
On the 6th of October, the Moon was captured directly behind the Statue of Liberty as it rose. From New Jersey, it almost seemed like the Statue of Liberty was touching the Moon as the Sun set in the west.
In a different action picture clicked on the same evening, a man was seen riding a foil board with the Brooklyn skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Harvest Supermoon in the backdrop.
The Beaver Moon (November)
A brilliant game of light and shadow was seen in Simi Valley, California, on the 5th of November as dark clouds floated past the bright Beaver Moon—the largest supermoon of the year.
The German capital was very lucky, as the sky was completely clear on the 5th of November. The sight of a spire against the big, bright Beaver Moon had a mysterious air about it.
The supermoon was right above the San Siro Stadium's pitch during a Champions League match between Inter Milan and FC Kairat Almaty. The sight was beautiful enough to take the attention away from the game for a few moments.
The Cold Moon (December)
An image taken on December 5 from San Diego, California, captures the festive mood well, with the Cold Moon in between elaborate arrangements of holiday lights.
A scene from Leigh-on-Sea in the United Kingdom successfully juxtaposed the divine and the mundane, as the Cold Moon was captured above a house with chimney pots, a TV aerial, and solar panels early in the morning of December 5.
On December 4, the Cold Moon outdid the Empire State Building and the midtown Manhattan skyline in terms of brilliance as it rose.
In another image that captured the festive spirit, the final supermoon of the year was seen shining bright behind Christmas decorations in Glastonbury, England.
Of course, lunar spectacles won't end with the close of 2025. In fact, the first major celestial event of the New Year is scheduled for January: the Wolf Supermoon, per Forbes. This moon, which will reach peak brightness early on Saturday, January 3, 2026, is named after ancient customs that linked the extreme winter cold with the howling of wolves. Be sure to catch a glimpse of it!
