Starbase Louisiana: How SpaceX may achieve 30 Starship launches per day with this $100 billion spaceport

Its construction will start in 2027, and the first Starship launch is planned for 2029.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX recently announced a $100 billion investment to build a sprawling spaceport in the state of Louisiana. Also called Starbase, like the establishment in Boca Chica, Texas, it will feature multiple launch pads and towers for Starship missions and will eventually support thousands of launches. According to SpaceX, Starbase Louisiana will be a self-sustaining spaceport with its own propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing facilities, and even an airport.

Its construction will start in 2027 in the Pecan Island area, and the first Starship launch is planned for 2029. 

Why Starbase Louisiana? 

In 2025, Musk had predicted that Starship would start launching 100 tons to orbit starting this year. While that hasn’t been achieved yet, increasing the tonnage to orbit through frequent launches is what Starbase Louisiana is supposed to enable. The site will reportedly feature five complexes with two launch towers each, which means a total of ten launch pads across the spaceport. The location will give SpaceX unrestricted range access as opposed to Florida, where many private launch companies operate.

Louisiana also offers a much larger area as compared to Texas. The former will provide access to about 125,000 acres of land, whereas Starbase Texas encompasses just 350 acres.

Starbase Louisiana will also enable easier access to polar orbits, which will be convenient for the data center satellites Starships will be carrying to space soon. SpaceX says the construction of the spaceport will also create more than 3,000 direct jobs at the new Starbase, as the focus will be on hiring local Louisiana workers for infrastructure development. Musk, on the other hand, said that as many as 10,000 jobs will be created thanks to Starbase. “It’s the kind of jobs that you can’t wait to go to work in the morning. It’s super inspiring,” Musk said in a promo video shared by SpaceX. 



As for the environmental concerns, SpaceX will work with state and federal agencies to expand Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan and Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act projects, including Gulf shoreline protection breakwaters to slow erosion. The company will also work on restoring marshlands that could connect fragmented wetlands and restore natural buffers against storms. Pecan Island and the surrounding wetlands are also important habitats for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, and other coastal wildlife. The company says it will use a small portion of the land while working towards preserving wildlife habitat and ensuring that recreational activities like hunting, fishing, and birding can continue.

Earlier this month, Musk said that Starships will be launching more than 30 times per day by 2030; that amounts to over 10,000 launches per year, and Starbase Louisiana may be the place that could make that happen. A high launch cadence will also help NASA build a sustained presence on the Moon, as Starships will fly with cargo more frequently, reducing the waiting time between flights.
