STAR NURSERY! NASA’s Webb imaged a nearby galaxy’s region where stars can have more than 100 times the Sun’s mass
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope imaged NGC 604, a star-forming region in the Triangulum galaxy about 2.7 million light-years away, NASA said on March 9, 2024. Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera and Mid-Infrared Instrument showed bubbles and tendrils of gas around young stars. NASA said more than 200 of the hottest, most massive kinds of stars, all in the early stages of their lives, are sheltered in the region, and the largest can have more than 100 times the mass of the Sun. NASA said the region is similar to the Orion Nebula but much larger and contains many more recently formed stars.
