How a logger’s five-day disappearance became one of history's most famous alien abduction mysteries
The disappearance that shocked America
Back on Nov. 5, 1975, a 22-year-old logger, Travis Walton, was heading home along with six of his fellow coworkers from the Sitgreaves National Forest. However, while returning, the entire team claimed to have come across an unidentified and unusual shiny disc. According to the descriptions, the disc was 40 feet in diameter.
Immediately after, Walton disappeared without a trace. The logger came back after five days, only to narrate a chilling alien abduction story.
A glowing object in the woods
Soon after spotting the shiny, metallic disc, Walton became overly curious. Ignoring the repeated warnings from his fellow loggers, Walton went outside the truck to get a closer look at the object. Detailing the scenario, Walton told Barbara Frum on ‘As It Happened,’ “I just wanted to get a closer look. I didn't have any idea of what would happen.”
In a separate discussion with HuffPost Weird News, Walton described the object as “a metallic, glowing disc, making some very strange sounds.” He also recalled how the strange object suddenly started to move while its noises became louder the moment Walton drew near.
Five missing days and a murder investigation
Speaking with HuffPost, Walton recalled how he had tried to run away from the shiny metallic object. Unfortunately, he was allegedly hit with an energy blast that numbed his body. Walton also revealed, “But the crew said it threw me through the air 10 or 20 feet and I landed in a way that they were immediately certain it had killed me, and they fled."
As Walton disappeared without a trace, the authorities became suspicious about possible foul play. They turned their attention towards the remaining 6 coworkers. The police carried out a possible murder investigation, when things took a wild turn. Just five days later, Walton came back and described how he was allegedly abducted by aliens and was held captive inside a bizarre craft.
A story that refused to go away
Speaking on ‘As It Happens,’ Walton detailed his experience once he regained consciousness. He described being kept in what he fathomed to be a hospital room. “I was in a lot of pain. And as I became more conscious, I looked around, and I saw alien beings, and I just panicked.” Walton also reminisced that although he saw stars through the window of the strange craft, there was no Sun or planet.
This observation made him believe that the craft was hovering somewhere outside our solar system. Soon after these claims became public, nationwide debate erupted. Walton’s story inspired the book The Walton Experience. It was later adapted into the popular film Fire in the Sky.
The mystery still isn't solved
As the story gained traction, the authorities decided to launch a full-fledged investigation. During this time, both Walton and his six coworkers were made to go through a rigorous routine. It included polygraph tests, medical examinations, and psychological evaluations. Surprisingly, there was no notable information that came up. Such a development negated the possibilities of a rational solution to the strange case.
In his interaction with HuffPost, Walton provided quite an interesting piece of advice. He said that trees near the site where they spotted the mysterious object had resulted in an unusual growth rate in wood fiber production. “About 15 years later, it was discovered that the trees nearest to where [the UFO] hovered had been producing wood fiber at 36 times the rate it had in the 85 years before that,” Walton pointed out.
